Understanding Credits

Think of credits like points your student needs to collect to graduate. Here's what you need to know:

  • Students need 25 total credits to graduate

  • Each class is worth 0.5 credits per semester when passed with a D grade or better

  • Your student takes 7 classes each year

  • Students can earn up to 7 credits per year

Required Classes and Credits

Here's a breakdown of what classes your student needs to take:

English (4 credits)

Your student needs four years of English classes. These classes help develop reading, writing, and communication skills needed for life after high school.

Math (3 credits)

Students must take:

  • Algebra 1

  • Geometry

  • One more math class of their choice These classes build problem-solving skills used in many careers and daily life.

Science (3 credits)

Students need three years of science, including at least two lab sciences. These classes help students understand the world around them and prepare for careers in healthcare, technology, and engineering.

Social Studies (3 credits)

Students learn about history and government through:

  • Washington State History (usually taken in middle school)

  • World History (1 year)

  • U.S. History (1 year)

  • Contemporary World Problems and Civics (1 year)

Health and Physical Education (2 credits)

  • 1.5 credits of Physical Education (PE)

  • 0.5 credits of Health class These classes teach students about staying healthy and active throughout their lives.

Career and Technical Education (1 credit)

These hands-on classes help students explore different careers and learn practical skills.

Arts (1 credit)

Students can take classes in music, drama, visual arts, or other creative subjects.

Personalized Pathway (3 credits)

These are classes that connect to your student's career and college goals. Your student will choose these based on what they want to do after high school.

Electives (5 credits)

These are additional classes your student can choose based on their interests.

Beyond Credits: Other Graduation Requirements

1. High School and Beyond Plan

Every student creates a plan for what they want to do after graduation. This includes:

  • Career goals

  • Class choices that support these goals

  • Plans for college, trade school, military, or work

2. Graduation Pathway

Students must complete one of these options:

Option 1: State Tests Pass state tests in:

  • English with a score of 2548 or higher

  • Math with a score of 2595 or higher

Option 2: Dual Credit Classes Pass certain high school classes that also earn college credit

Option 3: AP or IB Tests Score well on Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests

Option 4: ASVAB Test Score 31 or higher on the military entrance exam

Option 5: Career & Technical Classes Complete two years of classes in the same career area

Important Notes for Families

  • Students should start planning early to meet these requirements

  • If your student is struggling in any classes, help is available

  • Regular meetings with Ms. Fisher can help keep your student on track

  • Some requirements can be modified for students with special circumstances
